“With the all-new 2006 Mazda MX-5 as a starting point, it was easy for us to create the fastest, best-handling and most comprehensively prepared Spec Miata yet,” said Steve Sanders, manager, MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development.
To turn the new MX-5 into a race car, MAZDASPEED turned to a number of respected suppliers and partners, including AiM Sports, who provided the MXL Pista digital display and data logger.
“Given Mazda’s philosophy of offering the Spec Miata as an affordable yet quality racing experience, their choice of the MXL was appropriate,” said Michael Jaynes, president of AiM Sports. “The MXL is not only the most advanced automotive data logger on the market today, it is also the easiest to use, install and own.”
The MXL Pista is a powerful data acquisition unit that displays RPM, speed, temperatures, pressures, lap times, and more on a brilliant, easy to read display. It is compatible with numerous engine computers (ECUs). Direct ECU connections utilize a simple harness installation to provide dozens of information channels direct from the car’s computer.
Further, eight input channels allow for custom sensor installations and data collection on vehicles without compatible ECUs. The MXL Pista stores hours of race data in 8 MB of memory, and features a USB connection for easy download to a PC. The included Race Studio software provides a professional level of data analysis that is easy to use and apply to any level of driving. In addition, the MXL has a built-in accelerometer to provide track mapping data and configurable alarms.
The MXL Pista is not only easy to install and use, it is easy to own, priced very competitively at $1999 for a full system that includes display, software, USB cable, trackside timing beacon, and wiring harness. The Spec Miata series provides an affordable, entry-level nationwide class whereby amateur racing drivers can compete in inexpensive, identically prepared first- and second-generation Miatas. The greatest attraction of the series is that all regions of the country use similar rules and regulations, enabling drivers to compete nationally and always remain competitive.
Often held in conjunction with SCCA professional road-racing events and sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing, the current MAZDASPEED Miata Cup professional Spec Miata series is an inexpensive way to participate in top-flight road racing in front of professional teams and large crowds.
The all-new 2006 MX-5 Miata is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder MZR engine, derived from the powerplant used in the MAZDA3 and MAZDA6. In stock trim, it produces 170-hp at 7000 RPM and a very flat and usable torque curve peaking at 140 lb-ft. at 5000 RPM.
MAZDASPEED’s intention is to use this car as the prototype from which they will further develop the package of components that will transform the MX-5 for the 2006 season of a professional Spec Miata series.
