WKA

In the past 2 days the World Karting Association has announced 2 major changes for the 2007 season. First after much lobbying by its membership they have added a Manufacturers Cup race at New Castle Indiana. Undoubetdly one of two fine facilities located in the state.

Secondly with regards to WKA's effort to cut down on the tire prepping problems they have modified the tire rule for next year which will allow the competitors to bring their own tires to the track. They still must be new and not scuffed and are subject to random inspections with the new sniffer which is in use now. Tire prep is a huge issue affecting our sport and I applaud any club, group or organization trying to control it. Personally I am glad its not my problem to figure out as its so difficult to try and please everyone. I believe that they are doing this for the long term future of our sport and health of its members.

So with these two changes, one to a growing Manufacturers Cup series and one to the Briggs and Stratton National Dirt series which has seen markedly lower numbers this year I see nothing but a great year ahead for both.

Winter Storage

BatteriesFall has begun and the racing season is starting to wind down. In many parts of the country this means no more racing until spring. In preparation for the upcoming winter and storage of your racing gear, one item many times overlooked is your MyChron.

The only precaution needed to be taken for winter storage is the removal of your batteries. What happens to batteries which remain in your gauge for extended periods of inactivity is that they will slowly but surely discharge. When the voltage drops below .7 volts they produce hydrogen gas which which will force caustic chemicals through the US Goverment mandated safety caps.

The result of this will be that next spring you will get ready for your first outing and your gauge may not turn on. You will install new batteries but it wont help. So to save yourself some cash and aggravation take a couple of minutes this winter and remove those batteries.

Road America

I had the pleasure of supporting the Champ Car Rotax Kart Grand Nationals at Road America this past week. It was a very well run event despite all the rain and congestion in the pit area. Marshall Martin and the whole crew did a fabulous job despite all of this. The pre-finals on Friday were run in less than optimum conditions with a steady rain throughout the morning with mostly dry conditions by the time the last pre-final took to the track.

This event featured something that most kart races dont. It was run in conjuction with Champ Car, AMA SuperMoto, Barber Dodge and Mazda Miata Pro Cup races. The Rotaxians shared the paddock with the SuperMoto guys who ran their races on the same track as the karts with the addition of a couple of jumps and an off track dirt section which really threw a challenge at the riders. Maybe we need that kind of track for the karters, at least a jump or two! The paddock area was filled with the sounds of Champ Cars, Rotaxes and AMA SuperMoto thumpers throughout the event. It was a racers dream.

Throughout the weekend I ran into many old friends from California whom I havent seen in many years. Overall it was a great weekend! Congratulations to all the champions as well as everyone who gave it their best as well.
