Weekend Warriors

Looks like another busy weekend for all of us here at AiM Sports. I will be supporting the Mid America Speedway Series finale at Winfield Kansas. This first year series has done quite well and I am looking forward to the final event for them.

Aaron is off to the final race of the very competitive WKA George Kugler Manufacturers Cup race at New Castle Motorsports Park in Greenfield Indiana. This will be the first time that a WKA sanctioned event has been held at the Dismore facility.

Trey will be down at Liberty Raceway for First Annual Firestone Fall Nationals. This looks to be a huge race at Jim Smiths facility. Should be one not to miss.

Last but not least is Chad, he will be waiting quite impatiently for the birth of his first baby who is due any moment. I have been expecting his phone call in the middle of the night for a week or so but so far nothing. He and his wife are very ready!

Almost forgot Devan, looks like he will be staying home studying for college or out running around with his girlfriend. Probably a little of both.

Well lets hope everyone has a safe and great weekend. Look for updates early next week which should include new GPS features, SCCA Run Off support and upcoming semninar schedules.

Naked 200 MPH Club

Scott McLeod is the new top speed record holder and newest member of the Bonneville "Naked" 200 mph club.

Mcleod

The record of 215.051 mph averaged speed, was set on Scott's Suzuki Hayabusa in the (M-BG 1350cc) class. The "naked" class name comes from the lack of any fairings in front of the rider or any sort of streamlining - no protection from the wind. Scott gained entry into the coveted Bonneville naked 200 mph club as member number 19, the 19th person in the history of Bonneville land speed racing to break a record over 200 mph on a motorcycle with no fairings.

Read More of Scott's story and how he used his MXL to break records...

Mcleodsalt-1

As told by Scott:

[I'm a] Local contractor from Seattle whose just gotten into drag racing and land speed racing.

Bought a 2005 Suzuki Hayabusa to turbo charge for my new street bike

Met the local drag strip champion in 2006 and was talked into bringing my bike to the drag strip to see what it could do. After my first pass I was totally hooked. Wide open throttle with no cross traffic to worry about was so cool. After a few passes at the local drag strips I was required to get my NHRA drag racing license before I could go any quicker.

After racing on the weekends for two months, my No. 3 cylinder leaned out and melted under 10 pounds a boost. There was a lot of speculation of what might have caused it but nothing was ever conclusive. Not knowing why the engine failed drove me nuts. At this point, since I was running the engine hard, I decided it was time to buy a data logger. I rebuilt the engine with heavy duty parts and installed a data logger that recorded air fuel ratio, boost levels and RPM. This allowed me to do some minor tuning and keep the air fuel ratio safe. It grabbed its info from the bikes secondary fuel controller. The logger was adequate for basic performance but I soon realized at the beginning of the 2007 drag racing season I needed more information than it could supply. I was winning races, but I was still struggling to get the bike to make consistent passes. This year I was also planning on taking the bike to the Bonneville salt flats to see how fast I could go.

I contacted most of the major data logger manufacturers and inquired about their sampling rates and the number of channels their models offered. After searching for a few months I narrowed down my choices to the AiM Sports data loggers and accessories. The AiM Sports MXL / EVO series of data logger's was the best bang for the buck out there for my applications. Both units would handle all the new sensors I wanted to install and had enough memory to record a week's worth of racing. The only dilemma I was having now was, should I buy the EVO or the MXL PRO? The EVO was a small black box recorder that would let me keep my stock gauge cluster. The the MXL pro is a cool LCD display that can be programmed to show any of its installed sensors I want to monitor. I made cutouts of all the external gauges I wanted to monitor while using my stock instrument panel and taped them around the stock gauge cluster. As it turns out I didn't have enough room for all the extra gauges. The MXL pro is now the clear choice. I ordered and installed the MXL pro and sensors a week before I departed for speed week 2007 at the Bonneville salt flats. After I made my rookie runs I turned up the power to see what the bike could do. At mile 3 the rear wheel sensor said I was doing 269 mph and the GPS showed only 205 mph. Managing traction is the key to going fast for a motorcycle on the salt flats. As I analyzed my wheel spin, the next a few passes got progressively faster. At speeds over 200 mph the wind shear on my unfaired bike was so strong that it ripped off the air filter that clamps to the intake of the turbocharger three times. By Thursday I had upped the current record to 215.051 mph and was indoctrinated into the prestigious Bonneville 200 mph club. I had just accomplished a lifelong dream. In my opinion the MXL pro just paid for itself. During my runs I found out that the No. 1 and No. 3 cylinder's start to lean out after 20 pounds of boost even though my air fuel mixture looks fine. This will help me re-tune for next year's speed week where I will run with the fairings on.

Mcleodcrew

As told by Scott Guthrie from Landracing.com:
SCOTT HORNER and SCOTT Mc LEOD announced early at Speed Week 2007 that there was going to be a real battle in “naked” class M/BG-1350. Both men were running fast against a record set in 2003 with bike now owned by Member Scott Guthrie. On Monday, Scott Horner showed 206.419 MPH in the first mile, while Mc Leod ran 205.726 in the final mile. Mc Leod’s 207.527 MPH exit speed demonstrated that he still had “something left.” The early week speeds promised much faster times later in the week, if both men did their jobs, and the bikes held together.

In the next morning’s runs, Horner couldn’t hold his bike on course in the high winds, and Mc Leod’s name doesn’t appear in the results for a record return attempt.

(Somewhere in here, Mc Leod suffered a “paperwork malfunction,” and his over 200 MPH record was disallowed by the SCTA / BNI.)

Horner was still safe for the moment.

Horner then grabbed the record first, on Wednesday, at 209.793 MPH. Horner received the coveted “Red Hat” from the Bonneville 200 MPH Club, and was introduced to the hundreds of people attending the 200 Club banquet that evening.

Mc Leod wasn’t done yet.

On Thursday, with time running out for the week that started on Saturday, Mc Leod responded with an exit speed of 219.057 MPH, and snagged the record from Horner by about 6 MPH, setting Horner’s 209.793 MPH mark up to 215.051 MPH.

That took Horner’s name out of the record book after only 24 hours.

Horner wasn’t out of options either, and changed classes to challenge a record set in the 2006 Speed Week by Club Member Scott Guthrie, in class M / BF-1350. Horner upped Guthrie’s record to 205.589 MPH to regain a place in the record book on the last day of the meet.

Mc Leod had recorded a 200.451 MPH “naked” at El Mirage the month before. Not enough for Club membership against a record of 202.107 MPH, but still plenty fast.

Think next year is going to be fun?

Kyle Mitchell - National Champion!

Congratulations Kyle Mitchell!

2007 Western Division National Champion

Kylemitchell 11 year old Kyle Mitchell and family, like nearly 1000 other jr. drag racers, headed to Bandimere Speedway in Colorado last month with dreams of winning a National Championship and a coveted Wally trophy at the 2007 Western Division Conference Finals. A week long event that requires perfection on the part of both the driver and the crew chief.

In preparation for this years Conference Finals, a MyChron3 660 was added to Kyle's car, and Kyle and crew chief (Dad) made the best use of it. Kyle's dad writes:

"We would like to thank you for the best tach on the market. We put a Mychron 660 on our car three weeks before Western Conference Finals. With new information Kyle was able to take top spot in the 11 year-old class. We believe our MyChron 660 enabled us to move to the next level and win a National Championship. Thank you, and we tell everyone this is a must have."

Well, thanks to both of you! We too think the MyChron3 660 is the best jr drag racing data logger available, but it's your hard work and preperation that made Kyle a National Champion.

Racing and Warm Weather

Its that time again for the WKA popular Manufacturers Cup to get underway at the 103rd Street Sports Complex in Jacksonville Florida. Its been several years since the Man Cup competed at the Jacksonville track and judging by the turnout for last weeks divisional the crowd should be huge. Popularity amongst drivers as well as the warm weather should make for a great weekend of racing.

With that I am outta here and on my way to the airport. Check back next week for my update and GPS report.

Fresh from Florida - GPS

daytona.jpg

Our new GPS expansion module, connected to our MXL, was put to use this past weekend at the Fresh from Florida 200 Grand-Am race, held in conjunction with the Rolex 24 hours of Daytona. While we considered the export to Google Earth a fun feature, and perhaps useful for point to point events such as solo racing, hill climbs, rally racing, and similar — this kind of accuracy will prove equally, or even more so, useful in circuit racing. Just look at the detail from this practice session…

daytonazoom.jpg

There's always been discussion around GPS use for comparing driving lines. A common request is "…can I drive around the inside of the track on one lap, then the outside on another, then somehow merge those two to create map boundaries?" Well, with GPS data this good, used in conjunction with satellite images from Google Earth, you can concentrate on your racing and less on your surveying skills. Good stuff! We're excited and there is so much more to come…

Navy Racing Junior Dragsters

An update from Rick Brown:

The girls of Navy Racing went out of their way to change the name of the "King of the Track" competition at E-Town this weekend.

Shannon and Maria eliminated three 2005 track champions and two current points leaders this weekend. As fate would have it they drew each other in the sixth round of competition with Shannon advancing the Navy car to the semi-finals where she lost on her seventh trip down the track.

Rick Brown, managing the team, said of their MyChron3 660 gauges: "I can't wait to get a whole season with such a quality instrument."

AIM MXL Race Data Systems Take Charge in the Grand Am Cup Series

Contributed by Neel Vasavada of Apex Speed Technology

The 2006 Grand Am Cup competition has been great for AIM. Since introducing the first MXL digital displays and racing data loggers into the series last year, the AIM MXL has quickly become the dominant data logging/driver display system in the series. At VIR, the Synergy Porsche 997 with Pat Long at the wheel led the race and set the fastest lap before a final-lap incident.

apex-ga-porsche.jpg

The Synergy-built Marcus Motorsports 997 of Spencer Pompelly/Andy Lally finished 3rd. At Laguna Seca, our 997 finished 2nd bested only by the Porsche 996 of Bernheim Racing, which also features an AIM dash installed by our good friend Joe Hullet at Digital Competition Systems. At Phoenix, Apex Speed Technology AIM installations finished 1st, 3rd, and 8th.

Apex Speed Technology follows our custom approach with these systems. All wiring is custom and integrated with the chassis wherever possible for neat, tidy and reliable installation. We run a variety of custom sensors, such a fuel level (featuring a low-fuel light) and ABS warning/disable indicator off standard MXL channels. Not only do they feature common components like shock pots and brake pressures, but they take many of their values straight from the Porsche ECU via the “CAN bus” connection.

Every AIM customer we’ve spoken to is very impressed with their power, performance and value, and word is getting around. Looking up and down the grid, there are many other cars with AIM products, from MXLs to Davids to lap timers. We’re already sold our first AIM systems for the more advanced Grand Am ROLEX series, and there’s no doubt in my mind that more and more of those teams are going to see the value and performance of AIM systems.

The ease of installation and flexibility makes AIM an ideal choice for a wide range of customers. Club racers can benefit from the same features that the pros use, without paying pro-racing prices. Having the Race Studio Analysis software standard across the range means no matter what your project or budget, there’s an AIM system for you with room to grow!

Special thanks to Mario @ AIM and Joe from Digital Competition Systems for all their help and support at the track!

The 24 hours of LeMans is the ultimate endurance race for sports cars. AiM Sports is proud to be a small part, as a DaVid Stand-Alone video and data logger, providing race data acquisition synchronized with 2 video camera views, will be in use by car 66, driven by no less than Borcheller, Mowlem and Fittipaldi under the Acemco Motorsports banner.

AiM Sports Racing Data Systems Give Grand-Am Cup Racers the Edge

berheim-laguna-may06.jpg
Car owner/driver Steve Bernheim and Dwain Dement shared the No. 03 BernheimLaw.com Porsche 996 in the Grand-Am Cup 200 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on May 6th, with the latter taking the checkered flag to score the first career series win for Bernheim Racing and a win for both drivers in their native California.

Dement, of Laguna Hills, CA, took control of the No. 03 machine from Bernheim during one of the race's seven caution periods, running near the front of the pack throughout most of the final stint. The decisive pass came on Lap 50, when Dement overtook Lonnie Pechnik in the No. 09 Engine Music Studios/Fiske Wheels BMW M3 in Turn 2 and never looked back, finishing 1.596-seconds ahead of Patrick Long in the No. 81 Wheel Enhancement/Synergy Racing Porsche 997.

"The crew gave me a good car and all I had to do was point it and go," said Dement. "We just ran clean, we stayed out of trouble and the yellows helped us. That's how we won the race."

Bernheim, of Beverly Hills, qualified the machine 24th overall, and steadily picked off positions during his stint. In three previous career Grand-Am Cup Series starts, Bernheim's best finish was 10th, coming with Dement in the season-opener at Daytona International Speedway.

"It feels really great to win," said Bernheim. "We're big supporters of this series and Bernheim is a sponsor (Bernheim Improve Your Position Award). I'd like to thank Dwain. He not only brought home the bacon, but he built this car. The strategy was to bring in the car clean and turn it over to Dwain. We were able to do the race on one stop, and Dwain just had to watch his fuel during yellows."

The Porsche 996 is outfitted with an AiM Sports MXL Pista data logger/digital display and DaVid data/video logging system. Joe Hullet, of Digital Competition Systems, is the team's race engineer and data acquisition specialist. "In an endurance situation, it's great to have the AiM systems to track fuel usage and distance covered in addition to lap times, speeds, temps and other engine performance metrics. The DaVid system lets us review the video as soon as the car comes in and see what the driver and the car were experiencing."

andrew-caddell.jpg

Seventeen year old Andrew Caddell started out the 2006 racing season with a bang, taking the checkered flag in the Oregon Region SCCA Spec Miata race at Portland International Raceway this past Sunday, April 23. Andrew, who started in kart racing in 1998, stepped up to Spec Miata in 2005 and won the SCCA NW region championship.

Coached by his father, veteran racer Roger Caddell, Andy uses a variety of data acquisition tools to measure his performance and look for ways to improve. His Spec Miata uses an AiM Sports MXL Pro data logger and digital display, and a DaVid video system. See photos and details of the MXL installation on Roger's website. Additionally, you can download and analyze Andy's driving data.

Check out this video footage of Andy's final winning laps, recorded using the DaVid system. The screenshot below explains the DaVid screen layout, which is fully customizable.

Just another day on the job...

Contributed by Erik Nielsen
(Director of Marketing)

Monday was a fun day. Chad, Aaron and I went out to VIR's North Course to meet up with the group from Team Pro Motion. TPM is a motorcycle racers' club that sets up track events, a race series and other fun events for motorcycle racers of all abilities. TPM also runs a Parts Club with some great deals on gear and parts for members.

Check out the schedule of events, chock full of over 70 track events this season. Team Pro Motion also has a great group of instructors and coaches who offer training and advice to aspiring racers.

The atmosphere was fun, friendly and very laid back, though the raining weather early in the day dampened spirits for a little while. Then the sun was out by late morning and the track was dry soon after...

For those who may not know, MyChron Chad Brackens (seen at right pretending to work on TPM's Glen Goldman's Ducati) has a true passion for motorcycles, currently riding a Yamaha R6 600. Past bikes include another R6, a GSXR 1000 and a Honda CBR 600 F3. Maybe if we're lucky we'll see him on the track at VIR on the 28th for the next Team Pro-Motion event?

AiM Sports at 2006 IMSA Season Opener in Sebring

Contributed by Joe Hullet
(Digital Competition Systems)

The 2006 IMSA series looked strong as ever with over 50 cars entered in the exciting Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge at the season opener in Sebring, FL. Over 30 of the new 997 GT3 Cup race cars and 20+ 996 GT3 Cup race cars.

AIM customers Kevin Roush and Nathan Schwarzbaugh of Southern California finish 1-2 in the race using the DaVid Stand-Alone video system in their new 2006 Porsche 997 GT3 Cup cars. Providing data and video, the Wheel Enhancement team utilized their systems by overlays and video to match each others driving styles and speeds.

Kevin Roush started from the pole position and led flag to flag with Nathan hard on his heels. Neither of these guys had ever driven at Sebring before so the video was crucial to the development of their efforts. A sincere congratulations to team managers John Brown and Jim Schwarzbaugh and their drivers on an outstanding performance.

AIM also picks up a strong second place finish in the Star Mazda series from team AIM Autosport out of Canada. This team runs 3 of the Star Mazda entries all using AIM MXL data systems.

Congratulations to all the over 50 AIM customers that ran at the 54th running of the 12 Hours of Sebring event in SCCA World Challenge, IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge and the Star Mazda Series.

Over 50 cars ran AiM systems at Sebring.

Lowes

After almost a three month break the World Karting Association Manufacturers Cup returns to action at the newly repaved Lowes Motor Speedway. The first race of the season started off in Daytona with record entries and lots of competition. Expect to see more of the same on the challenging 14 turn track inside Nascar turn 3 and 4 at Lowes. WKA has taken a 2 year hiatus from competition here and I know many of the racers are looking forward to this event and with the weather forecast almost perfect we should see huge crowds. Chad and myself will be in attendance for support and we will also have several of the powerful new M4's for demo so if anyone reads this and has an interest give me a call at the shop and we will get youi hooked up.

Race Day!

The start of the Daytona 200

Contributed by Joe Hullet
(Digital Competition Systems)

Race day arrives, and I am nervous! We spent last night changing the gearbox, making the final ride height changes and shock settings. The warm-up in the morning confirmed we had finally got it right and we were ready for the race. I finalized my fuel strategy and think we can make it on one stop for fuel, 4 tires and a driver change. My fuel capacity would only last 1 hour, 5 minutes but I needed 1 hour 15 minutes so I was counting on some yellow laps to push us along.

We got those laps during the first part of the race and again in the "fuel window" at 1 hour. When everyone else dove in for their stop, I told my driver to stay out and let me know the status of the incident in the "bus stop" that had caused this caution. After a few laps under caution, he let me know when the crashed car was being loaded on the flatbed and the tire wall was being repaired and then I knew I had 2 more laps under yellow to get our stop done. We came in nearly 10 minutes after everyone else and extended our fuel window out the second half of the race closer to the end. It would be close unless we got another caution! We got that caution at around the 2 hour mark and I now knew we could finish with the fuel we had.

At the last of the race, we were running some of the fastest laps of the race in the low 2:02 range and were making passes every lap. As the race came to the last 5 minutes, the cars began to pit for the "splash and go" stops and for many that pushed the envelope, the deadening feeling of that gurgle and bog as the motor had used the last of it's fuel. We were pushing and pushing hard as others began to try and conserve the fuel they had left. We had qualified 40th the day before because of the broken gearbox and today, it was starting to look like our luck had changed. As the checkered flag came out for the finish of the Daytona 200, we crossed the line in the top 10 of 88 entries. I guess the "Racing Gods" were looking down on us today...

What a Day...

You know it's a bad day
when the driver's working on the car.

Contributed by Joe Hullet
(Digital Competition Systems)

Well, what a day. Everything that could go wrong did. It started out with some ride height changes and shock setting changes and quickly deteriorated from there. Settings made in pit lane under the pressure of 45 minute sessions and shared pit space led to some mistakes and set backs. We were able to stay in the top 20 and then lost 4th gear in the last session, 1 hour before qualifying. No time to get that box replaced so we had to go out and qualify with no 4th gear.

Needless to say, we will take the grid with a good look of the competition in front of us. We think we have the chassis platform back under control but are still guessing on a chassis pitch issue. Hopefully, an additional 50 PSI in the front shock canisters will give us the front end support under hard braking we were missing. We have 1 more 45 minute practice in the morning and we take the green flag at 2:30. Both drivers will need to get some seat time during that practice so I hope the setup is close... I guess we'll see...

Daytona Report: Wednesday 1/25/2006

Bernheim Racing.

Bernheim Racing #03 Porsche 996 Carrera running in Grand-Am Cup Grand Sport.

Contributed by Joe Hullet
(Digital Competition Systems)

We got to the track and got our rigs parked and headed off to tech as there was no tracktime today. There are 169 cars to go through tech and it took hours. We still have to report to tech again in the morning before we take the track at 11:30.

We got our pitlane assignments and ended up first hot pit in pitlane. Could be good or bad as we cannot get a pitlane speed penalty coming in but it could be a curse as we need to watch any pace car position as it takes 40 seconds to get out. We have to be out of pitlane before the pace car with the field in tow crosses start/finish or we get held up to let the field by and going down 1 lap. It should take some crafty strategy...

We have 2 sessions tomorrow to get our setup right and then we qualify for Fridays race at 5:30. We believe we have a good setup to start and are only looking to fine-tune the suspension during our sessions. We will also need to calculate our fuel strategy by tomorrow night and hopefully get in some pitstop practice.

Browsing the paddock, we found no less than 30 cars running the MXL data systems and several utilizing the DaVid video system. Race teams using AIM components have increased by over 300% in Grand-Am Cup since last year. 3 AIM support representatives (Mario Trujillo, Chad Brackens and myself) are onsite to make sure all the customers and products are performing at their best.

Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona

Mike and Joe at Road America

Contributed by Joe Hullet
(Digital Competition Systems)

Next week begins the journey to run the 44th Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. I have not missed one since 1994 and this year should be one of the best in history.

With a "who's-who" in motorsports line up, there are drivers from around the world and so many coming from IRL, Champ Car, NASCAR and IMSA. Dario Franchitti, Scott Pruett, Luis Diaz, Alan McNish, Danica Patrick, Rusty Wallace, Max Papis, Dan Wheldon, Scott Dixon, Boris Said, Casey Mears, Andy Wallace, Tony Stewart, Emmanuel Coullard, Scott Sharp, Adrian Fernandez, Eddie Cheever, Graham Rahal, the list goes on and on. Even the Grand-Am Cup shows some huge racing talent and TV personalities with Patrick Dempsey and Sebastien Bourdais.

There are 73 cars entered in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona starting Saturday, January 28th at 12:00 noon and 85 cars entered in the Grand Am Cup race starting Friday, January 27th at 2:15 in the afternoon. You can catch all the action on Speed Channel and Live Timing and Scoring on the Grand-Am website.

Rolex 24 Hours

Following a busy week in Daytona for WKA KartWeek it was back to Florida just days after our return for support of the Rolex 24 Hour test. In attendance were MyChron Chad Brackens, Mario Trujillo and Joe Hullett to service our growing auto clientele. Many of the factory Ford Mustangs, Mazda RX8's, Porsche GT3's and a couple of Prototypes were taking advantage of our top of the line MXL and DaVid Video systems in preparation for the grueling 24 hour race the last weekend in January.

Look for results later this month on how teams and drivers using AiM systems placed in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona.
