MXL GPS Lap Times
MXL firmware version v14.86.23 was released today with some significant improvements.
GPS Lap and Split Times
Finally out of beta, beacon-less lap timing has arrived. GPS lap and split timing is now possible with this new firmware version. The MXL now has a GPS lap/spilt setup page, which allows you to drive around the track and press a button where you want the lap and split times to be. The GPS module for the MXL has a 50 track memory, so once a lap/split configuration is done for a track, you won't have to do it again. It will "know" where you are, just start driving.
The GPS Lap Time User Manual can be downloaded here. While the MXL v14.86.23 firmware can be downloaded here. Please note that it is important to have the GPS module connected to the MXL during the firmware update, as the GPS module is also updated.
The GPS Lap Manual also contains some brief notes on a beta software called GPS Manager. While it is beta, this software allows you to export GPS lap/split configurations from the GPS module, and send the config to another GPS module or vehicle. This is important for teams who need to overlay data and do not want the time shift of different GPS beacon locations. This software will also allow you to name, remove, store, share, and add notes to the GPS lap/split config file. The GPS Manager beta can be downloaded here.
MXL Memory Key
This firmware also adds support for a new MXL Memory Key due out in January. Using a similar CAN/USB data key to our MyChron4 product, the new MXL Memory Key connects anywhere to MXL expansion CAN-bus and all data is recorded directly to the Memory Key, while simultaneously recording the MXL memory. The Memory Key contains 32MB of memory. The Memory Key has been extensively tested and is very robust. It is hot swappable, it can be removed or connected while the car is running and moved between cars. Because the Memory Key is also a USB device, you no longer have to bring the lap top out to the car, rather just take the key from the car and plug it into your USB port to download from the key.
Online Vref Value
All AiM systems for the past 11 years have used a 4.5V reference for analog channels, earlier this year, the MXL was moved to a more standard 5.0V reference voltage. The software intelligently manages this change and is transparent to the user. However, when creating custom sensors with the Custom Sensor function, knowing the reference voltage is often required. With the added Online Vref Value, you no longer need to bring out the multimeter to determine whether your MXL is a 4.5V or 5.0V system.

Electromotive TEC3

The much requested Electromotive TEC3 ECU is now fully supported! You can now connect your MXL, MyChron3 XG Log, or DaVid system directly to your Electromotive TEC3 ECU. The TEC3 streams up to 28 channels of data via direct serial connection. Having such an ECU connection scores nearly all engine data, and also frees up analog inputs for other input types like; steering position, shock travel/velocities, additional temps, additional pressures, infrared tire temps, and more. Connecting the TEC3 is as simple as connecting two wires.

Hondata ECU Conection
The Hondata protocol is now out of beta and working great! You can now connect your MXL, MyChron3 XG Log, or DaVid system directly to your Hondata KPro ECU and receive up to 23 channels of data from the ECU. Having such an ECU connection also frees up analog inputs for other input types like; steering position, shock travel/velocities, additional temps, additional pressures, infrared tire temps, and more. The KPro connection requires an inline circuit between the ECU and AiM dash/logger. The connection is available now for $75 USD. --Update Nov. 29th, 2007 - Works with model PRB KPro.

RS2 Vista Update
A Vista compatible update to Race Studio 2 is coming real soon, perhaps even ahead of our July schedule. The above screen capture shows the DaVid video configuration screen, which was otherwise impossible in Vista. There is still some testing to do, including some backwards compatibility testing with Win XP and Win 98, but the progress is looking good.

Snap On, Snap Off
Due to the beacon shift function not working in the current version of Race Studio 2 (I was told this will be fixed in the next release), I had my first go at making a screencast with Camtasia this morning to illustrate to a customer how the snap on/off feature works and how it can be used to accomplish the same thing.
Beyond the temporary shift of data for alignment purposes, there are many other uses for this feature, and from my weekends at the race track, very few know about this feature. Other uses come from wanting to line up linearized data based on something other than time or distance, brake pressures, and steering angle for example.
In any case, this 35 second full screen video shows the basics of the Snap ON/OFF feature and how to turn it on and off.

Even More ECU Support
Clearly, one of our greatest strengths is our systems' ability to connect directly to your car or motorcycle's ECU — and therefore record and monitor the ECU data in real time. We currently support more ECU's than anyone in our industry, many more! These ECU connection are often as simple as connecting two wires, or sometimes just one. Over this 2-wire connection streams 10, 20, 30, even up to 100 channels of data, good high-speed data. As most of our customers are racers, we have avoided OBDII communication because it's simply not fast enough. Where we have used a connection at the OBDII port, is with some of the OEM protocols; Mazda, Nissan, Audi, VW, Porsche, and BMW. Here, we simply use the OBDII port to gain easy access to the cars CAN-bus, where we can simply "listen" to the messages flying around the vehicles electronic system, and record the channels we are interested in. While we could develop a OBDII system to communicate with nearly every vehicles diagnostic system, the quality and data rate would be compromised.
Just added ECU support:
Hydra EMS Nemesis
Performance Electronics ECU-1
Magnetti Marelli Toyota A
Nissan 350Z (OEM)
ECU's to soon be supported:
Electromotive TEC³
Hondata KPro
MicroTech Systems
...and more!

Windows Vista
One of the most common tech questions rolling in, is about support for Windows Vista. Officially, Windows Vista is not yet supported. Full support is expected in July, a couple months away. Our DragAnalyzer software seem to be OK running under Vista, though driver installation requires a little more work than in XP. Race Studio 2, on the other hand, is a mixed bag. Most cannot get it successfully installed and running. The DaVid video configuration is surely an issue. Our technicians here will update to Windows Vista about the same time as the Race Studio 2 release. Until then, our support for Windows Vista is VERY limited.

Updates; RS2, MyChron4, & MXL
Late last week we finished three updates.
Race Studio 2 has gone to version 2.21.22, which adds additional ECU support, and includes a few general improvements as well as minor bug fixes to both the configuration software and analysis software. This release also continues GPS analysis improvements. This download also includes sample GPS data from Daytona.
The MyChron4 firmware update includes better management of the data key and adds zero configuration support to the forthcoming GPS module, as well as support for the LCU-One lambda controller. Also snuck in is a divide by two (/2) Engine RPM setting, bringing support to some two cylinder, single coil applications.
The, also new, MXL firmware update (14.81) is the first non-beta version to include zero configuration support for the new GPS module. The most significant improvement is run based downloads. This means if multiple sessions are run without a download, each session will produce it's own download file when downloaded. Whereas previously, multiple sessions where combined into one download and file. Version 14.81 also offers more robust CAN management. This update will also update any connected LCU-one to a new version with minor improvements. Lastly, v14.81 contains the first release of MXL QM (Quarter Mile) support for a forthcoming drag race offering. Important note, this firmware requires Race Studio v2.21.21 or later.
All updates are suggested for all customers.
